Silver ring – The bold and the beautiful :)

June 28, 2009

Sometimes I buy stones just because I think they are big, beautiful, sparkly, with nice color and nice cut… like this stone. This gorgeous amethyst is a big 12mm stone, it has perfect clarity, beautiful checkerboard cut and nice light purple color that is the same all over the stone (no darker or lighter spots anywhere). The price of amethysts, and a lot of other stones, are determined by their size, clarity, cut and color. So this stone is on the expensive side of the stone spectrum. The only thing that takes the price down a notch is the color. It is light purple but the ones with deeper, darker color are more expensive.

I wanted to make a big ring, something that would stand out very eye catching and this is what I did:

Mollusc-Ammonite

June 28, 2009

This stone is a pyritized former Mollusc life form, called Ammonite, that is extinct. Once this animal lived in the sea (marine animal) but when it died it´s remaines pyritized and it´s shell disintegrated. Two years ago I was buying some stones when I picked this up and got greedy. I bought this and one like it but didn´t have a clue what to do with it. After buying it I thought to myself that I had been crazy for buying it because it would be hard to use it in jewellery. When I was going through my box of gemstones this spring I held this one in my hand for a little while and got the idea of putting it on a silver wire and use slimmer silver wire to hold it up. I think it´s beautiful, simple and primitive in this golden form. I love watching it dangle slightly on the wire when the golden light reflects off it.

Mooka Jasper on silver wire

June 17, 2009

Two years ago I was visiting London and was in my favorite shop in Hatton Garden when I found this stone. I found it interesting and decided to buy it even though I didnt´have a clue what I would do with it. Actually most of the stones I buy I have no idea what to do with ;-) The idea of the designs usually come to me when I´m in bed, right before I go to sleep, or when I´m out walking alone or when I´m holding some stone in my hand and letting my mind wander.

Lately I have been very relaxed and feeling the pull of the part of me that needs to create something nice. So I have been browsing my big box of gemstones, renewing my familiarity of the ones I own. While I looked through the box I had so many ideas and have since been making some of the designs, slowly but surely.

This one I made while my boys were playing with some toys in my garage. I was sitting by my work bench and they were looking through a box with old toys and having fun. It felt good to hear them laughing and having fun while I was having my own kind of fun bending and twisting the 0.75 mm silver wire inside the stone and putting it then on a 1.5 mm silver wire that goes like a cable around the neck.

The stone is called Mooka Jasper and has a mixture of coral red colors. It´s rather big but not flashy and it shines very beautifully, or so I think!

Gurrý – name necklace

June 17, 2009

In Feruary I was asked by my co worker Guðríður, called Gurrý, if I could make her a name necklace with her nickname. Of course I could and I was very happy that I could make it before her big birthday in March.

She looks gorgeous with her necklace and I always enjoy seeing her with it.

When I´m asked to make name necklaces I make sure that the Icelandic letters are in the design, like Gurrý, not just Gurry. It gives me strange satisfaction to see the name like it is in Icelandic because no one else is doing anything like that, anywhere!
