Silver necklace with Amethyst

March 10, 2008

This necklace I made at the course in Kvöldskóli Kópavogs. This is the first piece I made in February and it took serious time making it.

I got the idea for the necklace in January and decided I would wait for the silver smithing course before making it since I wasn´t so sure if I could make it without destroying it.

I used really thick piece of silver sheet in the design, hammered it to get the texture I wanted and made it concave with some tools I have in my garage. I used thick silver wires to make the claw for the excellent Amethyst I bought last December. The stone is Checkerboard cut and is great quality.

This piece took two weekends to be made and with it I use heavy and long silver chain.

When I said to my teacher, Leifur, “I just get the craziest ideas”, he laughed and felt the same way. Sometimes I just get ideas and I just can´t get them out of my head unless I make the designs. This is one of those designs.
